India-China border dialogue via WMCC
Entities: Sujit Ghosh · China · Hou Yanqi · India · Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India‑China Border Affair
Overview
On 6–7 August 2026, India and China met in New Delhi for the 36th session of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border affairs. The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary Sujit Ghosh, while China was represented by Director‑General Hou Yanqi.
The talks covered boundary delimitation, border management, institutional mechanisms and trans‑border cooperation along the Line of Actual Control. Both sides reaffirmed the need to maintain peace and agreed to keep existing diplomatic and military channels active, including WMCC meetings, local commander‑level talks and other agreed formats, to avoid misunderstandings.
India also urged an early convening of an expert‑level mechanism on trans‑border rivers and highlighted recent confidence‑building steps such as the resumption of the Kailash‑Manasarovar pilgrimage and restored civil‑aviation links.
