Modi’s Jakarta Visit Secures BrahMos Deal and Broad India‑Indonesia Strategic Pact
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jakarta on 6 July 2026 for the first leg of a three‑nation tour, receiving a ceremonial welcome at Istana Merdeka and Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, the Bintang Adipurna, from President Prabowo Subianto. Modi praised the cultural performances, noting “Witnessed a captivating performance of Wayang Kulit… a moving reminder of our shared civilisational heritage,” and highlighted the popularity of Bollywood, saying “‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ is very popular here.”
During the two‑day visit the leaders signed 16 memoranda covering defence, critical minerals, health, education and digital finance. Key agreements include the supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra air‑to‑air missiles to Indonesia, joint development of the Sabang port, Indian investment in steel, nickel and rare‑earth manufacturing in Indonesia, and the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management‑Bangalore campus in East Java. Additional pacts deepen cooperation on medical product regulation, health‑workforce exchange, space research, food security and the linking of Indonesia’s QRIS payment system with India’s UPI. The joint statement affirmed a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” and pledged deeper collaboration across maritime security, technology transfer and cultural ties.
