India and Myanmar discuss strengthening defence cooperation

India and Myanmar held their third Defence Cooperation Meeting in Guwahati on October 7, 2026, to review bilateral initiatives and discuss new strategies for strengthening security ties. The meeting was co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Myanmar’s Chief of Armed Forces Training, Lt Gen Pyae Sone Linn.

Discussions focused on enhancing training, capacity building, and mutual security. A significant portion of the dialogue centered on maritime engagement in the Bay of Bengal, including the development of Mobile Training Teams (MTTs) and fostering naval interoperability. This follows previous high-level naval discussions held in Naypyitaw in May 2026.

Myanmar officials expressed appreciation for India’s humanitarian assistance provided through ‘Operation Brahma’ in response to a devastating earthquake in Myanmar, noting India’s role as a ‘first responder’ and close neighbor.
