Myanmar regional diplomatic and security engagements

Overview

Myanmar is engaging in various bilateral diplomatic and security efforts with neighboring countries.

In Malaysia, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing met in Putrajaya to commit to deepening relations through trade, investment, education, energy, and healthcare. The leaders noted significant economic growth, with bilateral activities increasing by over 140 per cent year-on-year between January and August. Discussions also addressed the repatriation of undocumented Myanmar nationals, with over 10,000 citizens returned so far this year.

Simultaneously, India and Myanmar held their third Defence Cooperation Meeting in Guwahati. Officials focused on enhancing training, capacity building, and maritime engagement in the Bay of Bengal. Myanmar officials also acknowledged India’s role as a ‘first responder’ regarding humanitarian assistance provided through ‘Operation Brahma’ following a devastating earthquake.
