India and Pakistan clash at UN over Jammu and Kashmir status

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, India and Pakistan engaged in a sharp diplomatic exchange regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan’s representative, Sarfraz Ahmed Gohar, rejected India’s claim that the region is an internal matter, asserting that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory. Pakistan maintained that the final status of the region must be determined by the wishes of its people in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. Additionally, Pakistani officials emphasized the need for multilateral engagement to prevent security crises between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

In a Right of Reply, India’s First Secretary Bhavika Mangalanandan categorically rejected Pakistan’s remarks, stating that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of India. India further criticized Pakistan’s domestic political situation, alleging that its civilian governments serve at the mercy of the military. India also accused Pakistan of using the dispute to distract from domestic discontent and of sponsoring cross-border terrorism for over three decades.
