India and Pakistan tensions rise over water treaty and AI propaganda
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following the release of an AI-generated propaganda video by Pakistan regarding ‘Operation Sindoor’. The video, which has been mocked online for lacking real footage, claims the destruction of multiple Indian airbases, defense systems, and government facilities including Parliament. This follows a Discovery documentary that provided first-hand accounts and footage of the operation and its impact on Pakistan’s military infrastructure.
Concurrently, the status of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty remains a critical point of contention. India has kept the treaty in abeyance following terror attacks, arguing that the strategic and security circumstances of the 21st century have fundamentally changed since the pact was signed. Uttam Sinha of the Institute of Defence Studies & Analysis suggests that India may maintain this abeyance until Pakistan addresses terrorism concerns, noting that the suspension has allowed India to proceed with various hydroelectric projects, such as the Ratle project, that were previously obstructed.
