India and Philippines deepen strategic partnership as trade hits $4 billion

At a diplomatic reception in New Delhi marking the 128th anniversary of Philippine independence, Ambassador Josel F. Ignacio said India occupies a “prominent and impactful place” in Manila’s foreign policy. He highlighted the Philippines’ role as a fast‑growing economy and a responsible multilateral stakeholder, noting the country’s current ASEAN chairmanship under the theme “Navigating Our Future Together,” built on the pillars of peace and security, prosperity, and people empowerment.

Ignacio pointed to sustained growth in bilateral ties, with trade reaching almost USD 4 billion and defence cooperation expanding to include equipment, military education, training, and maritime activities. The presence of India’s Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, underscored the upward trajectory. The partnership was elevated to a strategic level during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s visit to India in August, making India the Philippines’ fifth strategic partner.
