By September 2026, the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA) moved into a critical phase of formal approval. The European Commission has submitted proposals to the European Council to sign and conclude the pact, which is described as a “bold leap for two economic powerhouses.” If finalized, it is expected to be the largest trade agreement ever concluded by both entities.

A central component of the agreement involves the reduction or elimination of tariffs on 96 percent of EU goods exported to India, a move estimated to save European exporters approximately 4 billion euros in annual customs duties. The deal aims to improve market access, remove trade barriers, and establish predictable regulatory standards. Strategically, the EU views the agreement as a means to diversify global supply chains and reduce dependence on China by leveraging India’s manufacturing and services sectors.

This progress follows earlier stages in August 2026, where legal scrubbing was completed and translation processes began. At that time, Poland’s Ambassador to India, Piotr Antoni Switalski, noted there was “no reason for delay” regarding the end-of-year timeline.

Economic interest remains high, building on bilateral trade in goods that reached $136.54 billion in 2024-25. Current trade in goods and services between the two regions is valued at over 180 billion euros annually, supporting nearly 800,000 jobs within the EU. Beyond general trade, nations like Finland seek to use the FTA to expand collaboration in space technology, maritime technologies, telecommunications, and the circular economy.
