Russia engages Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India in regional security talks

Russia is increasing its diplomatic engagement in South Asia as tensions persist between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev met with Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, in Rawalpindi on October 14. Concurrently, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service director, Sergey Naryshkin, met with the Taliban’s intelligence chief, Abdul Haq Wasiq, in Kabul.

Moscow has expressed readiness to act as a peace broker between Islamabad and Kabul if requested by both parties. This follows a history of border tensions and air strikes conducted by Pakistan in Afghan territory. While previous mediators like China, Qatar, and Turkey have attempted to facilitate stability, the ongoing conflict remains a significant regional security concern.

In a separate diplomatic development, India and Russia held their seventh round of security consultations in New Delhi. Co-chaired by India’s Deputy National Security Adviser Pavan Kapoor and Russia’s Deputy Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Venediktov, the talks focused on regional security developments involving Afghanistan and Pakistan and their broader international implications.
