India and Russia reaffirm special strategic partnership ahead of BRICS summit

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told the National Day celebrations of the Russian Federation that “India and Russia share a special bond that has withstood the test of time.” He described the relationship as a “special and privileged strategic partnership” that serves as an “anchor of stability” in today’s complex geopolitical landscape. Misri said the two countries are deepening cooperation across trade, defence, civil nuclear energy, space, Arctic connectivity and other sectors, with a goal of raising bilateral trade to US$100 billion by 2030.

Both diplomats highlighted the upcoming BRICS Leaders Summit in September 2026, which will be hosted in New Delhi and is expected to welcome President Vladimir Putin. Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov also congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest‑serving prime minister, underscoring the personal warmth that underpins the partnership. The statements reaffirm the countries’ shared commitment to a multipolar, inclusive international order amid global conflicts, economic uncertainty and supply‑chain disruptions.
