India and United States advance trade talks, framework deal poised for signing
Industry groups and officials from both sides are urging dialogue over possible tariffs as the United States and India continue bilateral trade negotiations. The USTR public hearing on a new trade probe prompted Indian businesses to request use of the existing India‑US Trade Policy Forum rather than imposing fresh duties.
Indian Trade Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said the framework for a trade agreement is ready and can be signed when the timing is appropriate. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal repeatedly dismissed a Reuters report as “completely false, baseless and misleading”, insisting that “both sides reaffirmed their commitment to an agreement that is balanced, commercially meaningful and delivers tangible benefits for businesses, farmers, workers and consumers”. The minister added that talks are constructive and no challenges are seen.
The discussions occur against a backdrop of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that restored a standard 10% tariff on Indian goods and amid U.S. proposals for higher tariffs on several countries, including India, over alleged forced‑labour concerns. Both governments say the negotiations remain on track and the deal will be finalized once mutually favourable terms are confirmed.
