Visegrád Group backs India’s bid for permanent UN Security Council seat

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held the first-ever high-level meeting with the foreign ministers of the Visegrád Group (V4), comprising Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

The V4 nations expressed unified support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, describing India as an emerging superpower in the Indo-Pacific and a vital representative of the Global South. The ministers agreed to establish a new diplomatic mechanism involving annual foreign minister meetings and an annual business forum to strengthen ties.

Cooperation discussions focused on expanding partnerships in defense, technology, innovation, space, connectivity, and education. The group also addressed global challenges, including the Ukraine conflict, energy security, and the need for multilateral system reforms.
