India Approves E100 Ethanol Fuel Standards to Boost Energy Security

The Indian government has approved norms for 100 percent ethanol fuel (E100), creating a regulatory pathway for vehicles that can run on pure ethanol. The move is intended to cut reliance on imported crude oil, support domestic agricultural producers, and lower carbon emissions. Major manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, MG Motor and Hyundai are evaluating flex‑fuel platforms compatible with E100.

A KPMG report notes that India’s ethanol strategy is shifting from the current E20 blend to a broader transport‑fuel role. The report highlights the need for flex‑fuel vehicles, multi‑grade distribution infrastructure and diversified feedstocks to enable higher blends like E85/E100. It argues that expanding ethanol use can mitigate oil price volatility and enhance long‑term energy security, while also outlining challenges such as feedstock limits, pricing structures and infrastructure upgrades.
