India authorities crack down on illegal and spurious drug operations

Authorities in India have taken significant action against illegal pharmaceutical operations involving spurious and expired medicines. In Hyderabad, the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) raided Mahaveer Medicals in Musheerabad. The shop, operated by Jayesh Arvind Jain without a valid license, resulted in the seizure of 32 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, antihypertensives, and antifungal drugs. Officials noted that expired medications were among the stock intended for sale.

In Karnataka, Health Minister U. T. Khader announced major enforcement actions following the discovery of a clandestine repackaging unit in Bidadi, Bengaluru. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) uncovered a syndicate that procured low-cost generic drugs from other states and repackaged them with forged labels to mimic expensive life-saving medicines from multinational companies. As a result, the licenses of 16 pharmaceutical distributors were cancelled and 8 others were suspended. The crackdown affected firms primarily based in Bengaluru, with additional actions in Hubballi and Belagavi.
