Indian pharmaceutical fraud enforcement

Indian authorities have launched significant enforcement actions against illegal pharmaceutical operations involving spurious, expired, and counterfeit medicines.

In Telangana, officials raided an unlicensed medical shop in Hyderabad, seizing 32 varieties of medications, including antibiotics and antihypertensives. In Karnataka, investigations into a clandestine repackaging unit in Bidadi revealed a syndicate that procured low-cost generic drugs and applied forged labels to mimic expensive life-saving medicines from multinational companies.

The Karnataka Food and Drug Administration (FDA) subsequently cancelled 16 drug licenses and suspended eight others after a raid on a farmhouse yielded drugs, machinery, and printing materials valued at approximately ₹5.05 crore. A major portion of the seizure included 5,640 vials of Cefiavigent 2.5 injection, a critical-care medication used in cancer treatment, valued at nearly ₹3.38 crore.

While five individuals have been arrested, authorities believe the suspected kingpin is located in Azerbaijan. The investigation suggests a nationwide network with potential links to Himachal Pradesh and Telangana. In response, the Karnataka government has formed a special investigation team and requested assistance from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation.
