India auto sales reach record high in May 2026

India’s automobile sector posted its strongest May ever, with passenger‑vehicle volumes climbing 27.3% year‑on‑year to 438,854 units. All major segments posted double‑digit growth, helped by a lower base, reduced GST rates and easier financing, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Two‑wheelers rose 14.8% to 1,902,209 units, while three‑wheelers jumped 31.1% to 70,720 units. Scooter sales surged 27.4% to 739,667 units, outpacing motorcycles, which grew 7.2% to 1,113,973 units. Moped registrations also rose 30.3% to 48,569 units. E‑rickshaw sales increased 38.9% to 1,000 units. SIAM Director‑General Rajesh Menon credited lower GST, easier credit and the prior year’s low base for the record‑breaking off‑take.
