India auto market expands SUV, EV, and cleaner-fuel segments

Overview

India’s automotive industry is undergoing a structural shift toward electrification and alternative fuels. In August 2026, cleaner-fuel vehicles—including electric (EV), hybrid, and compressed natural gas (CNG) models—surpassed petrol sales for the first time, accounting for 42% of passenger vehicle sales compared to petrol’s 41%. During this period, CNG sales reached a record 25%, while EV sales grew 52% year-on-year to 30,700 units.

Domestic demand rose in August ahead of the festive season. Honda Cars India Ltd. reported a 40% increase in domestic sales, reaching 5,385 units, driven by the Onam festival and new models, though exports declined. Hero MotoCorp saw total dispatches rise to 568,398 units, supported by a 38% growth in its VIDA electric unit. Hyundai Motor India achieved its highest-ever domestic sales for August with 54,396 units, a 23.6% year-on-year increase. While Hyundai’s total sales including exports rose 8.8%, they saw a sequential decline from July due to logistical disruptions in West Asia.

To maintain momentum, Hyundai is offering consumer benefits through September 2026, including up to Rs 1 lakh in discounts for the Creta SUV. Looking ahead, Hyundai aims for EVs, hybrids, and CNG vehicles to each account for approximately one-third of its total sales by 2030. In the competitive EV landscape, Tata Motors saw its market share recover to approximately 43%, while JSW MG Motor’s share declined to around 15%.

Growth is also evident in the two-wheeler segment. Electric two-wheeler (E2W) sales reached 1.83 lakh units in August, a 67% year-on-year increase. TVS Motor Company led the E2W market with a 91% year-on-year increase, capturing a 27% market share, while Bajaj Auto saw a 235% year-on-year surge. Conversely, Ola Electric was the only major brand to report a year-on-year decline in E2W retail volumes.
