India awards green hydrogen capacity to four refineries

India has awarded 30 kilotonnes per annum (KTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity to four refineries under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This allocation, made through the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Mode 2B scheme, aims to reduce fossil fuel reliance and support net-zero ambitions.

The capacity distribution is as follows: - Indian Oil Corporation: 10 KTPA at the Panipat refinery - Numaligarh Refineries: 10 KTPA at Numaligarh - Bharat Petroleum Corporation: 5 KTPA at the Bina refinery - Hindustan Petroleum Corporation: 5 KTPA at the Vizag refinery

These projects will operate under build-own-operate (BOO) arrangements. Simultaneously, Japan-based H2 Innovation Ltd is seeking to expand its presence in India through research and development. The company plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with Anna University to promote green hydrogen and power generation technology, while also engaging with the Ministry of Industry to bring Japanese hydrogen systems to the Indian market.
