India Boosts AI and Cloud Capacity with Amazon $13B Investment and Government Compute Expansion

Amazon announced an additional $13 billion investment in India to expand its artificial‑intelligence and cloud infrastructure, bringing its planned spend to $48 billion between 2026 and 2030. The funding will increase AWS data‑centre capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad and support new fulfillment centres, delivery stations and job creation initiatives.

India’s Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said the government will augment national AI compute capacity and work with industry and universities to develop next‑generation technology. Plans include pilot sector‑specific data trusts at IIT Hyderabad, equipping 315 universities with advanced EDA tools for semiconductor design, and expanding the country’s electronics manufacturing and export sector.

Both moves aim to strengthen India’s position as a global technology hub, provide AI services to startups, enterprises and government bodies, and create millions of jobs by 2030.
