India quick‑commerce sector expansion
Overview
Amazon has pledged a total $48 billion investment in India through 2030, with $13 billion earmarked for artificial‑intelligence and cloud infrastructure. The funding expands AWS data‑centre capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad, underpins new fulfillment centres, last‑mile stations and the ultra‑fast Amazon Now service now operating in more than 300 cities, and drives the Sammaan welfare programme for delivery staff. Amazon aims to digitise 15 million small businesses, create up to 3.8 million jobs and provide AI education to millions, while targeting $80 billion in e‑commerce exports by 2030. Cumulative spending since 2010 exceeds $88 billion.
The rapid‑delivery push reverberated in markets: Blinkit’s parent Eternal fell 28 % and Swiggy slid 47 %, erasing over $15 billion in value as incumbents grapple with discounting, delivery costs and dark‑store competition. Amazon also launched Supply Chain Services for external clients, while Flipkart’s Ekart secured major logistics contracts and continues building its Minutes micro‑fulfilment network.
In July, Amazon announced an additional $13 billion to boost AI and cloud capacity, aligning with the Indian government’s compute‑expansion plan. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw detailed joint efforts to create sector‑specific data trusts at IIT Hyderabad, equip 315 universities with advanced EDA tools for semiconductor design, and scale electronics manufacturing and exports. The partnership seeks to cement India’s role as a global technology hub, deliver AI services to startups, enterprises and government bodies, and generate millions of jobs by 2030.
The quick‑commerce market continues on a trajectory toward a $50 billion valuation by 2030, spurred by deep‑pocketed foreign investment and intensifying rivalry among domestic players.
