India-Canada Trade Delegation Seeks $50 Billion Deal Ahead of CEPA Negotiations

India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal led a large business delegation of over 100 companies to Canada for a three‑day visit from May 25‑27. The group held high‑level talks in Ottawa with Canadian prime minister Mark Carney and ministers of trade, agriculture, and foreign affairs, followed by industry roundtables and B2B meetings in Toronto.

The two sides reaffirmed commitment to fast‑track a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and set a target to lift bilateral trade from roughly $8‑9 billion (about $32 billion CAD) to $50 billion by 2030‑31. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in energy – including oil, LNG, carbon capture, renewable power and green hydrogen – as well as critical minerals, battery technology, fertilizers, agri‑food, AI, quantum research, and defence. Both governments signalled political will to conclude the pact and translate policy dialogue into commercial partnerships across infrastructure, clean energy, digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.
