India celebrates 12th National Handloom Day
India celebrated the 12th National Handloom Day on August 7, marking the anniversary of the 1905 Swadeshi Movement. The day serves to promote indigenous weaving traditions, self-reliance, and the livelihoods of the country's significant handloom workforce, which includes a high percentage of women and rural workers.
Regional celebrations took place across the country. In Odisha, Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati urged citizens to integrate handloom into their weekly lifestyles to support local weaver families. In Assam, ceremonies were held in Dibrugarh and Haflong to honor the region's textile heritage. In the high-altitude region of Changthang, Ladakh, officials distributed tools like Amber Charkhas and Fly Shuttle Looms to artisans and held a Tiranga Rally.
Public figures also voiced support for the sector. MP and actor Kangana Ranaut shared messages regarding the importance of cultural self-respect through traditional textiles, while actress Raveena Tandon expressed gratitude for the master weavers preserving India's legacy.
