India National Handloom Day and Textile Initiatives

Overview

India marked its 12th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2026, honoring the anniversary of the 1905 Swadeshi Movement. The ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre was presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, where the Ministry of Textiles presented the Sant Kabir and National Handloom Awards 2025 to 22 artisans. The event also featured the release of four commemorative postage stamps and the unveiling of two publications: “Earth. Root. Thread – Aal Dyed Handloom Textiles of Central India” and the Handloom Awards Book 2025.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized the handloom sector as a pillar of rural empowerment and women-led development, encouraging young people to engage with the industry via social media, specifically by sharing “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) videos. Leaders including Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the sector's role in employing over 35 lakh workers, the majority of whom are women.

Following the celebrations, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh launched two new initiatives in New Delhi to bolster the industry. These include the inauguration of Handloom Haat, a multi-floor Handloom Experience Centre at Janpath, and the launch of IIHT SUTRA 2026. The latter, a national conclave for the Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology, focused on modernizing technical education. During the conclave, MoUs were signed with Grasim Industries Limited, the Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA), and IIM Sambalpur to advance skill development, research, and leadership training.
