India observes Teachers' Day on September 5

India observes Teachers' Day annually on September 5 to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the nation’s second President, a renowned philosopher and educator. The tradition began in 1962 after Dr. Radhakrishnan requested that his birthday be dedicated to honoring all teachers.

While the day is a significant national observance marked by cultural programs and student-led activities in schools and colleges, it is not a gazetted public holiday. Consequently, government offices, banks, and most private businesses remain operational.

This national celebration is distinct from World Teachers' Day, which is observed internationally on October 5 to commemorate the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
