India central employees await Dearness Allowance increase

Central government employees and pensioners in India are awaiting an announcement regarding the increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for the July period. While the government typically announces the July adjustment in September or October, experts suggest an announcement could coincide with the Raksha Bandhan festival.

A projected increase of 2% to 3% is expected to help counteract inflation. Currently, DA is administered under the 7th Pay Commission, as the 8th Pay Commission has not yet been implemented. The adjustment affects approximately 50 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners, including those in the defense and railway sectors.

Regarding taxation, the Dearness Allowance is considered part of an individual's taxable income. It is not tax-exempt and is taxed according to the recipient's applicable income tax bracket. Consequently, while an increase in DA raises gross salary, the total tax liability may also fluctuate based on the overall taxable income.
