India central government Dearness Allowance updates

Overview

Central government employees and pensioners in India are awaiting an official announcement regarding an increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for the July period. Initially, expectations centered on a projected increase of 2% to 3% to counteract inflation, with potential announcements coinciding with the Raksha Bandhan festival.

Following the release of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data, projections have become more specific. The July 2026 index showed an increase of 1.3 points, bringing the reading to 153.2. Based on the 12-month average formula, the DA rate is projected to rise to approximately 64%, up from the 60% rate effective from January 2026. While an official government decision is expected between September and November, the adjustment will impact approximately 50 lakh employees and 65 lakh pensioners.
