India central government employees await Dearness Allowance hike

Millions of central government employees and pensioners in India are awaiting an announcement regarding the Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) hike effective from July 2026. Following the absence of a DA revision during the Union Cabinet meeting on October 14, expectations have shifted toward the next scheduled cabinet meeting on October 21.

Based on the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data, a 3% increase is projected. This would raise the current DA from 60% to 63%. If approved, the hike would apply retrospectively to July 2026, meaning employees and pensioners would receive arrears for July, August, and September.

The revision is expected to impact approximately 50 million central government employees and 65 million pensioners. While the government recently approved a productivity-linked bonus for railway personnel, the broader dearness allowance adjustment remains pending.
