India central government employees await potential Dearness Allowance hike
Central government employees and pensioners in India are awaiting an announcement regarding an increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR). Based on recent Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data, a projected increase of 3% to 4% is expected.
If implemented, the DA rate could rise from the current 60% to between 63% and 64%. The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers has formally requested the Ministry of Finance to expedite the process, citing the upcoming festival season and rising costs for education, travel, and household needs. The union emphasized that the increase, which would be effective from July 1, 2026, is a legal entitlement rather than a request for additional benefits.
The government typically revises these rates twice a year, in January and July. While the hike is anticipated, official confirmation from the central government has not yet been issued.
