India challenges UN map over Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin depictions

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised concerns with the United Nations regarding cartographic anomalies in a recently published world map. The map depicts Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as separate regions positioned between the claim lines of India and China.

New Delhi maintains that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of its territory and that Aksai Chin is part of Ladakh. The diplomatic response follows India’s recent vote in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution, known as the “Correct the Map” resolution, which promotes the use of equal-area map projections to accurately show the relative sizes of continents and countries.

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that India’s support for the technical standard of equal-area projections does not constitute an endorsement of specific political borders or disputed territories. Jaiswal stated, “The resolution neither adopts nor authenticates any particular world map, nor does it address political cartography, including international boundaries, disputed territories or place names.”
