India-China Arunachal Pradesh border dispute

Overview

India and China have entered a new phase of cartographic dispute regarding the Arunachal Pradesh region. The Indian government, working with the state government and the Survey of India, officially standardized the names of 27 geographical locations to ensure administrative consistency and counter China’s claims.

The standardized list includes 21 land areas (such as Longju, Maja, and Jaswant Garh), four mountain passes (Dzo La, Riza La, Pukur La, and Thag La), one lake (Sambho Sarovar), and one monument (Sher-e-Thapa Memorial). Other identified sites include Kamlang Nagar, Sunpura, Pritnagar, and several others. This initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Home Affairs, is viewed as an assertion of sovereignty against Beijing’s efforts to reshape geographical perceptions through nomenclature.

China has rejected the move, labeling the naming of these sites “illegal, null and void.” Beijing continues to claim the region as “Zangnan” or “south Tibet,” asserting that such naming exercises cannot alter its sovereignty claims. The tension follows a history of reciprocal naming actions by both nations regarding the border area, with India relying on the McMahon Line established in 1914, a boundary China does not recognize.

Expanding the dispute to international platforms, India’s Ministry of External Affairs recently raised concerns with the United Nations regarding a published world map that depicts Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as separate regions between the claim lines of India and China. While India recently supported a UN resolution regarding equal-area map projections, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the resolution “neither adopts nor authenticates any particular world map, nor does it address political cartography, including international boundaries, disputed territories or place names.”
