India commissions ICGS Akshay, fourth Adamya-class fast patrol vessel

The Indian Coast Guard formally commissioned ICGS Akshay, the fourth ship of the Adamya-class fast patrol vessels built by Goa Shipyard Limited at its Vasco facility. Senior officials, including Additional Secretary Parama Sen and Coast Guard Inspectors General Bhisham Sharma and Jyotindra Singh, attended the ceremony. Akshay (Yard 1273) measures 52 metres, displaces 320 tonnes and carries more than 60 % indigenous content, featuring Controllable Pitch Propeller propulsion, two 3,000 kW diesel engines, a 30 mm CRN 91 gun and two 12.7 mm remote‑controlled machine guns. Operated by six officers and 35 sailors, the vessel will carry out EEZ surveillance, fisheries protection, anti‑smuggling, anti‑piracy and search‑and‑rescue missions, strengthening India’s maritime security and reflecting the Atmanirbhar Bharat self‑reliance initiative. The induction underscores Goa Shipyard’s growing role in domestic defence manufacturing amid broader regional maritime security concerns.
