India expands naval self‑reliance and deterrent

Overview

India’s drive for defence self‑reliance has accelerated throughout 2026, extending both its conventional surface fleet and its sea‑based nuclear deterrent. In May the Arihant‑class SSBN INS Aridhaman was commissioned, giving the navy a third ballistic‑missile submarine and enabling a continuous‑at‑sea deterrence (CASD) rotation alongside INS Arihant and INS Arighat. The near‑completion of the underground INS Varsha base and the deployment of nuclear warheads on the SSBN fleet widen the strategic gap with Pakistan.

June saw the induction of three indigenously built warships at Kolkata: the Project‑17A stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, the survey vessel INS Sanshodhak and the Arnala‑class anti‑submarine craft INS Agray. In July the sixth Project‑17A frigate, INS Mahendragiri, entered service. Parallel to these capital‑ship programmes, the Mahe‑class shallow‑water ASW fleet grew with the commissioning of INS Malvan on 22 July. The commissioning of INS Malvan highlighted domestic supply chain integration, as ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India provided 100% of the specialised naval‑grade steel.

Further expansion of the anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW SWC) programme continued with the launch of the seventh vessel, Machilipatnam, and the delivery of the Mangrol, the third vessel in its specific series. These deliveries are part of a larger 16-vessel programme intended to bolster coastal defence and maritime domain awareness. As the Indian Navy aims to commission 18 warships in 2026—marking its largest single-year force accretion—the Ministry continues to link these milestones to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat agenda, emphasizing indigenous manufacturing and the use of domestic components from various firms and MSMEs.
