India commissions INS Malvan, second indigenous anti‑submarine warfare craft

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Malvan on 22 July 2026 at Karwar, Karnataka. The vessel is the second Mahe‑class Anti‑Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, with more than 80 percent indigenous content under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat programme.

INS Malvan is equipped with RBU‑6000 anti‑submarine rocket launchers, DRDO‑developed lightweight torpedoes, a German‑Indian sonar suite and water‑jet propulsion delivering a top speed of about 25 knots and a range of 1 800 nautical miles. The 78‑metre ship carries a crew of 57 and can also perform mine‑warfare, surveillance and low‑intensity maritime operations.

The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Air Chief Marshal A P Singh and Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan. The vessel joins its sister ship Arnala as part of a planned fleet of eight Mahe‑class crafts, strengthening India’s coastal defence, maritime domain awareness and anti‑submarine capability.
