India commissions three indigenous warships, boosting naval self‑reliance

On 21 June 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three indigenously built warships for the Indian Navy at Kolkata’s Shyam Prasad Mukherjee port. The vessels – stealth combat ship INS Dunagiri, large survey ship INS Sanshodhak and shallow‑water anti‑submarine corvette INS Agray – were designed by the Naval Design Bureau and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). They expand the Navy’s combat, maritime survey and anti‑submarine capabilities.

Modi used the ceremony to declare that India will no longer remain merely a buyer in the defence sector, emphasizing self‑reliance and the skill of Indian engineers and workers. He said the three ships symbolize India’s growing indigenous defence capabilities. The event was attended by West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi, Chief Minister Suvendu Niyogi, Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and other senior officials.
