India completes Dedicated Freight Corridor network to boost logistics
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the final sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), marking the full operationalization of India's Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors. The project, which includes the completion of 326 km of the WDFC at a cost exceeding Rs 20,700 crore, is intended to transform India's logistics landscape.
Key benefits of the completed network include significantly faster goods movement. Freight trains can now cover 100 km in less than half the previous time of 6.5 hours. Additionally, journeys that previously took 30 hours by truck are expected to be completed in 10 to 12 hours via the corridor. The network is projected to reduce India's logistics costs from 10 per cent to 7 per cent of GDP, enhancing global competitiveness.
The corridors provide direct connectivity to major hubs like the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPT), facilitating efficient export-import traffic. By separating freight from passenger rail, the system reduces congestion on conventional lines and increases capacity for both services. The infrastructure is expected to benefit farmers, manufacturers, and the broader supply chain by improving market access and reducing delays.
