Overview

India is advancing significant railway infrastructure projects to enhance connectivity and logistics efficiency. In the Siliguri Corridor, also known as the ‘Chicken’s Neck’, the government has approved a fourth railway line to increase capacity for passenger, freight, and military transport in the strategically vital region connecting northeastern states to the rest of the country. This includes additional projects such as a double underground rail line and station upgrades.

On a national scale, the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network has reached full operationalization. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the final sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), including the JNPT–New Umargam stretch. This completion includes 326 km of the WDFC at a cost exceeding Rs 20,700 crore, finalizing the combined 2,800-km Eastern and Western network.

The DFC network separates freight from passenger rail to reduce congestion. This infrastructure links northern India with the western coastline, connecting industrial centers to major ports like the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority. Officials state the corridor will transform the logistics landscape by reducing costs from 10 per cent of GDP to an estimated 7 per cent, aiding competition with China. The network supports high-capacity double-stack container trains, where a single service can carry cargo equivalent to 250 trucks. Freight trains can now cover 100 km in less than half the previous time, and journeys that previously took 30 hours by truck can now be completed in 10 to 12 hours via rail, providing a more reliable supply chain for manufacturers and farmers.
