Strait of Hormuz attacks leave two Indian seafarers missing

A series of maritime attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and near the coast of Oman has escalated regional tensions. On October 11, 2026, the Nicaragua-flagged tanker MT Petro Dolphin was struck by a drone at the Sohar Anchorage in Oman. Of the 12 crew members on board, including 11 Indian nationals and one Bangladeshi national, nine were rescued safely, while two Indian seafarers remain missing. Local Coast Guard units are conducting search-and-rescue operations.

On the same day, the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker MT Valthera was hit by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire. All 11 Indian seafarers on that vessel were reported safe. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has strongly condemned these attacks, calling for immediate de-escalation and a resolution through diplomacy. The Indian Embassy in Muscat is coordinating with Omani authorities to assist the crews.

Broader maritime activity shows signs of disruption. At least 10 supertankers have recently reversed course or stopped approaching the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates due to the escalating threat. Reports indicate a high frequency of strikes, with some data suggesting nearly daily incidents in the region throughout October. These developments occur amid ongoing geopolitical friction between the United States and Iran, with the Joint Maritime Information Center classifying the security threat in the Strait of Hormuz as 'SEVERE'.
