Escalating maritime attacks in the Strait of Hormuz

Overview

Maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz has deteriorated significantly due to a surge in attacks. While earlier reports noted at least ten vessels targeted, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) reports that over 110 vessels have been hit since the US-Israeli conflict with Iran began in late February, resulting in at least 24 confirmed deaths among seafarers. In late August, the Saudi-owned supertanker Sidr was struck by unidentified projectiles near the Musandam Peninsula, killing two Filipino sailors. Attacks reached record levels in October. Research from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy indicates 28 verified incidents occurred in October, bringing the total to 113 attacks since the conflict began on February 28. Analysis of IMO and MarineTraffic records shows more than 30 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) have sustained damage, with 11 incidents occurring in October alone. These targeted ships represent approximately 3.5 percent of the world’s supertanker capacity.

Recent escalations have resulted in the sinking of two vessels. The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank after being struck by a projectile and catching fire; all 21 crew members were evacuated. While the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the vessel struck a naval mine on an unauthorized route, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the ship was hit by an IRGC projectile. The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao also sank near the strait. Additionally, the Singapore-flagged GFS Giselle sustained hull damage but reached safe anchorage. Maritime security experts and the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) have noted a deliberate increase in the tempo of strikes targeting various vessels, including tankers and container ships.
