Maritime attacks and energy infrastructure strikes in Middle

Overview

On August 31, the Saudi-owned supertanker Sidr, operated by Bahri, was struck by unidentified projectiles near the Musandam Peninsula in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the deaths of two Filipino sailors. A second vessel, the South Korean-owned Senegal Prosperity, was also reportedly struck in the same vicinity while carrying Saudi crude oil. Both tankers were carrying approximately 2 million barrels of crude oil each.

Saudi Arabia condemned the attack and accused Iran of targeting the tanker. Conversely, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the vessels caught fire after striking sea mines while using an unauthorized route under US military influence. The United Arab Emirates described the incident as a “grave threat to international navigation” and a “dangerous escalation.”

Following the maritime incident, the Royal Navy of Oman’s maritime security center successfully rescued 16 crew members from the Saudi-flagged tanker, providing medical care and logistics to the survivors.

Regional instability has further escalated following a new attack on a Saudi Aramco oil facility in Jizan, near the Yemen border. While the full extent of the damage to the refinery, which has a daily capacity of approximately 400,000 barrels, is still being assessed, the attack has contributed to rising energy costs, with Brent crude reaching approximately $97 per barrel. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the Jizan strike, though it occurs amid ongoing friction between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels.
