India Says No Widespread Engine Damage From E20 Ethanol‑Blended Petrol

The Indian government told parliament that, based on experience from more than 23 crore (230 million) vehicles running on 20 % ethanol‑blended petrol (E20), there is no verified evidence of large‑scale engine failures or sudden vehicle shutdowns. Petroleum minister Suresh Gopi noted that over 20 crore two‑wheelers and 3 crore cars, including many older models built before E20 certification, have operated without any systemic technical problems.

The ministry cited scientific studies and consultations with bodies such as the Policy Commission, the Automotive Research Association of India, and vehicle manufacturers. While the blend is said to improve octane rating and reduce emissions, a modest 3‑5 % mileage reduction has been observed in some older E10‑designed engines. No decision has yet been made to increase the ethanol share beyond 20 %.
