India considers $5 billion Russian S-500 air defense deal

India is considering a major expansion of its air defense capabilities through a potential multi-billion dollar deal with Russia. The discussions involve the procurement of the S-500 Prometheus strategic missile system, which would serve as a high-altitude layer designed to intercept ballistic missiles, hypersonic glide vehicles, and objects in low Earth orbit.

Reports suggest the deal could exceed $5 billion and may include significant technology transfers and local assembly in India. The proposed package could include at least five S-500 divisions alongside five additional S-400 divisions. While the S-400 remains the primary system for countering aircraft, cruise missiles, and drones, the S-500 would provide a specialized strategic layer with an interception range of up to 600 kilometers.

These defense negotiations follow discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin. India is seeking to bolster its defense network to protect critical political, nuclear, and military assets from advanced aerial threats.
