India criticizes Pakistan's rule of law record at the United Nations
During a United Nations General Assembly Sixth Committee discussion on the ‘Rule of Law at National and International Levels’, India issued a Right of Reply to criticize Pakistan’s stance on the matter.
Mythili R, Counsellor for the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, accused Pakistan of attempting to divert attention from its own domestic record regarding minority rights, judicial independence, and press freedom by making allegations against India. India asserted that Pakistan lacks the moral authority to lecture others on the rule of law when, in its own country, ‘the military is the rule and the law’.
India further highlighted concerns regarding Pakistan’s democratic stability, noting that elected governments are often prevented from completing their terms. Specific criticism was directed at the treatment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, whom India described as being arbitrarily imprisoned and denied medical care despite Supreme Court directives, characterizing such actions as a mockery of the rule of law.
