India Education Minister Resigns Amid Student Protests Over Exam Fraud
After a six‑day wave of protests triggered by a massive fraud scandal in the national medical entrance exam, which affected more than two million candidates, Education Minister Pradhan announced his resignation. Demonstrators, organized by the online collective “Party of the Cockroach” (CJP), clashed with police in New Delhi, resulting in hundreds of injuries and reports of student suicides.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded by fast‑tracking a law that toughens penalties for exam cheating, creates special courts and accelerates investigations. Critics, including opposition MPs and the CJP founder, argue the legislation does not address the broader corruption networks behind the leaks. The bill has been passed in the lower house and awaits approval in the upper house while student protests continue.
