India emerges as key diesel supplier to Europe via Bab-el-Mandeb
India has emerged as a primary supplier of diesel to Europe, accounting for approximately 60 per cent of the fuel transiting the Bab-el-Mandeb shipping route in August. This shift occurs as Russian diesel exports have significantly declined and shipments from the United States have weakened.
According to data from energy intelligence firm Vortexa, roughly 200,000 barrels per day of diesel and gasoil were sent to Europe via this route in August. India's role is supported by its massive refining capacity, which stands at 258.1 million tonnes per annum, exceeding its domestic demand. During the 2025-26 fiscal year, India exported 61.5 million tonnes of petroleum products.
However, the sustainability of these exports faces potential challenges. Crude and condensate shipments into India fell to approximately 3.8 million barrels per day in August, down from 4.8 million barrels per day the previous year.
Simultaneously, Russia has expressed readiness to maintain its energy partnership with India. Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov stated that Moscow is prepared to supply India with as much crude as necessary, framing Western sanctions as “pressure tactics.” Data from Kpler indicates that in August, India purchased 2.1 million barrels of crude per day from Russia, representing 45 per cent of its total oil imports.
