India EV transition requires 1.32 million charging points by 2030

India faces a significant infrastructure requirement for its electric vehicle (EV) transition, with estimates suggesting the country will need 1.32 million charging points by 2030. As of August 2026, there were 67,657 installed chargers. While public charging stations have grown nearly six-fold since 2022, charger utilization remains low, between 1% and 5% for most operators. Currently, approximately 73% of chargers are rated below 30 kW, indicating a need for more DC fast and ultra-fast charging infrastructure along highways and urban areas.

On the economic front, a study by IIM Bangalore and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) indicates that the transition could support 7.2 million direct manufacturing jobs by 2040, provided India achieves significant battery cell localization. While the shift is expected to result in the loss of roughly 60% of internal combustion engine (ICE) related manufacturing jobs, the net impact could be positive. To maximize economic value, the report suggests India should aim for at least 30% battery localization by 2032 and 50% by 2040. Currently, India's battery cell production capacity is approximately 1.4 GWh, which is less than 3% of the projected requirement for 2032.
