India evaluates Russian Pantsir-S1 systems for air defense
India is reportedly considering the acquisition of 13 Russian-made Pantsir-S1 air defense systems to provide a low-cost point defense layer for its high-value military assets. The Ministry of Defence is examining proposals from both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army to use these highly mobile systems as a protective shield for S-400 Triumf long-range missile batteries.
The Pantsir-S1 would specifically aim to secure vulnerable S-400 components, including engagement and surveillance radars and transporter erector launchers. This strategic move follows recent combat experiences where the S-400 demonstrated capability against various aerial targets, highlighting the need for a layered defense against asymmetric threats like drones and cruise missiles.
Estimates for the cost of a single Pantsir-S1 combat vehicle range from $15 million to $20 million. Historical international procurement data shows varying price points, such as the UAE's purchase of 50 systems for approximately $734 million and a large-scale Saudi Arabian contract for the Pantsir-S1M package valued at roughly $2.3 billion.
