India air defense procurement evaluations
Overview
The Indian military is evaluating several international air defense solutions to counter low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats and protect high-value assets.
Initial assessments included the Russian TKB-1167 ‘Bizon’ anti-drone system, which utilizes machine guns and advanced airburst ammunition. Concurrently, officials from South Korea and India discussed the potential $2.5 billion acquisition of the Biho Hybrid system, a platform combining 30mm automatic cannons with short-range missiles.
More recent reports indicate that the Ministry of Defence is also considering the acquisition of 13 Russian-made Pantsir-S1 systems. These mobile units would serve as a low-cost point defense layer specifically designed to secure S-400 Triumf long-range missile batteries, including their surveillance radars and launchers, against asymmetric threats such as cruise missiles and drones.
