India's defence ministry, led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved revised financial authorisations for the army, navy and air force field commanders. The changes raise spending limits by up to 100 % in many cases and double them in others, enabling faster procurement worth more than ₹1.25 lakh crore.

The new powers also introduce a joint‑service procurement mechanism, allow more decentralised decision‑making, and double funding for indigenous research, development and production. The measures aim to cut reliance on foreign suppliers, boost the domestic defence industry and improve strategic self‑reliance. Senior officials present at the announcement included Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramaniam, Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy chief Admiral Krishnan Swaminathan and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The revised powers are expected to take effect in the current financial year and work alongside the updated defence procurement manual scheduled for October 2025.
