India's defence self‑reliance fuels global influence

Overview

In early July 2026 the Defence Acquisition Council approved a ₹52,000 crore procurement package that added anti‑drone EW systems, man‑portable anti‑tank missiles, medium‑range SAMs, V‑Shorads, active‑protection kits, kamikaze drones, naval mines, ship‑borne UAVs and an electric‑propulsion test facility. The Air Force is also fielding high‑altitude pseudo‑satellites for AI‑enabled ISR, communications and remote sensing.

The Army launched a five‑year, ₹75,000 crore modernisation programme to refurbish T‑72 and T‑90 tanks, BMP combat vehicles and recovery units, involving Armoured Vehicles Nigam Ltd, about 1,200 MSMEs and start‑ups. A ₹2,500 crore defence‑manufacturing plant in Madhya Pradesh began producing advanced equipment, deepening the Make in India supply chain.

Analysts see the expanding capabilities as part of India’s emergence as a “hinge‑state”, supported by strategic partnerships with the United States, Japan and Australia.

On 10 July the Army awarded a fast‑track ₹1.6 billion contract to Tata Advanced Systems and Nibe for 840 loitering‑munition drones with ranges over 100 km, feeding dedicated Shaktibaan, Divyastra and Bhairav units and a goal of 100,000 autonomous aerial systems.

A week later the push for indigenous loitering munitions accelerated: projects such as Tata’s ALS‑50 vertical‑take‑off system and the SMPP‑built Agniveg turbojet drone emphasise AI integration, swarm tactics and GPS‑denied operation for high‑altitude border challenges. The broader strategy targets a defence economy of ₹8.8 trillion by 2047, expanding domestic manufacturing, additive‑manufacturing, MRO capability and export potential.

On 31 July two Indian firms secured major orders that further the self‑reliance drive. Astra Microwave Products Ltd received a ₹2,205 crore contract from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for 122 Advanced Airborne Active Array units and 121 interface frames for the Uttam radar programme, while Apollo Micro Systems Ltd delivered an indigenously developed safety and detonation device to the Navy, replacing imported equipment and underscoring the shift toward domestic defence electronics.
