India targets semiconductor and nuclear expansion for 2047 goals
During his 80th Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a vision for a developed India by 2047, emphasizing technological self-reliance and expanded industrial capacity. A central pillar of this strategy is the semiconductor industry. India has approved 12 semiconductor projects across six states, involving investments exceeding ₹1.64 lakh crore. While three facilities have already commenced commercial production, the government expects five to eight more plants to be established within the next seven to eight years.
To support this high-tech manufacturing, the government is aggressively expanding its energy infrastructure. The Semicon 2.0 program, with an approved outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore, aims to strengthen the semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem. Simultaneously, India is targeting 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047 to provide the reliable energy required for advanced fabrication. The government has also opened the nuclear sector to private investment, with companies like Tata Power and Reliance exploring opportunities.
Beyond hardware, the government is focusing on digital capabilities, including the development of indigenous AI models and the expansion of the IndiaAI Mission. These efforts are part of the broader 'Viksit Bharat' framework, intended to position India as a trusted and central hub in the global supply chain for electronics, healthcare, and defense technologies.
