India expands solar‑plus‑storage to achieve round‑the‑clock renewable power

India has set a target of 500 GW of non‑fossil‑fuel capacity by 2030. Falling utility‑scale battery prices and some of the world's lowest solar tariffs are enabling solar‑plus‑storage projects that can store daytime generation and discharge it during evening peaks, delivering reliable, round‑the‑clock electricity.

These projects reduce reliance on coal, improve energy security by cutting fossil‑fuel imports, and lower operating costs for industrial users facing rising tariffs. Policymakers are increasingly incorporating storage requirements into renewable tenders, while grid modernization and transmission upgrades remain essential for broader deployment.

Globally, the International Energy Agency projects renewable electricity to rise from 32 % in 2024 to 43 % by 2030, with variable renewable sources nearly doubling. Pumped hydro and battery energy storage systems are identified as key low‑carbon technologies to meet growing demand and resolve grid congestion bottlenecks.
